FAQs

How do you measure energy savings?

A simple comparison of your current heating costs with the previous year’s costs will not be good enough. Last year, may have been warmer or colder, decreasing or increasing the amount of energy required to heat your home. The way to do it is by a methodology called heating degree days. This way we can compare apples with apples.

In simple terms, heating degree days are a measure of how much (in degrees), and for how long (in days), the outside air temperature was below a certain level. As you can imagine the calculation gets quite complex as outside air temperatures change throughout the day. Luckily for us these weather statistics are freely available to download which we can then use to compare against fuel used.
